Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store located on the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would alter our perception of avian intelligence. Her research with Alex challenged the notion that birds can only imitate human language without understanding the meaning.

What is Alex?

What was Alex like in terms of intelligence?

This process is referred to as the rival model, and it has since become an established method of teaching animals.

Alex was not only an intelligent dog but also a fun friend who loved to play with his owners. He was often an advisor and cheerleader during training sessions, urging or encouraging them to do better. He was extremely attentive, and he could sense the emotions of his human companions. What was Alex's influence?

Even after his death he continues to inspire people across the world. Free Solo is a film about Alex and his remarkable accomplishments in climbing. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim, and is considered to be one of the best documentaries of all time. It has won many awards including the Academy Award in 2019 for Best Documentary Feature.

In addition to his work with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues of bird intelligence. Alex was able to perform more than 100 vocal labels for actions and objects, was able to count object sets up to six, and showed math skills that were incredibly advanced for a bird at the time.

He could also communicate with other animals using signs and had a solid understanding of grammar. He employed a method of training called "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers often changed positions to allow the bird to interact with them and receive the attention of each.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was given the title of National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. Alex was able achieve many things throughout his life due to his strength of character and his determination to live life on his own terms.
